ACCESSIBILITY AND THE SPACE

We know how important it is to feel welcome and supported in any new environment, so we are putting together this section on accessibility to answer some common FAQ's about our space. This section is being worked on this summer (2025) so please bare with us while we improve the content! For now we have some basics:

INFORMATION FOR WHEELCHAIR USERS AND DISABLED FOLKS

- Is the workshop wheelchair accessible?

Yes, our space is wheelchair accessible however a few things to note:

Our workshop has a gently sloped ramp up into the doorway which can accomodate the width of a wheelchair. So far wheelchair users have had no problem using this! Leading out to the garden is a small lip where the concrete drops down to some woodchip (hard ground underneath) - again so far no problems using this however we will be uploading photos and getting more details for you here soon.

- What are the toilet facilities like?

The main toilet currently in the yard made another organisation has unfortunately not been built wheelchair accessible. Due to being close to a water source we unfortunately have not been able to build a composting toilet ourselves and do not have space to build another flushing toilet. We however have a strong commitment to providing a temporary wheelchair accessible toilet for any wheelchair users and have a relationship with a local toilet hire company who can provide us a wheelchair accessible toilet when we need it. We are aware this is not the best solution and are working on some plans to build our own specific wheelchair accessible toilet blick using a similar concept to temporary toilet designs (but nicer and wooden!). We hope to build this in the Autumn of 2025, and when this is finished will hopefully never need a portaloo again and will have a permenant wheelchair toilet on site. But in the meantime, we will provide you a temporary toilet for your workshop with us - they are clean and tidy to use.

- If I am a wheelchair user or disabled, can I physically manage the tasks in your workshops?

Absobloodylutely! All ages, all abilities, and all body types. We have wheelchair designed benches and vices for use if you need to sit for your workshop. We cannot guarantee you won't struggle at times, and some things may be a bit trickier than for able bodied folks, but there is zero reason you cannot achieve the same outcomes and we regularly facilitate many diverse body and brain types here who all leave the workshop empowered! Please do consider your own abilities and needs, and relay it to staff. We cannot fully hold and facilitate the space for you without your honesty and self-management. There is no FOMO or rush at the workshop, we treat everyone and their projects as individuals and you will not need to compare your work to others. Asking for more help is never a problem and actually the joy of a shared workshop environment!

INFORMATION ON LOCATION AND THE WHITE NATURE OF RURAL PROJECTS

- How do we get there if without a car?

Despite being 25 mins from central Brighton we are still a rural workshop space, where public transport is slow, arduous and inaccessible to many. We can offer bus and train station pick ups if messaged in advance of your workshop. More information coming soon! Please email us for info on transport help and lift shares in the mean time.

More information coming soon on our acknowledgement of the racist and white dominated nature of the countryside and how that may feel or impact you.

Our workshop is located just outside Steyning, West Sussex at Buncton Manor Farm. There are transport links from Brighton, Shoreham, Worthing and Horsham, and we’re 1-2 hours drive from London.
