IN OUR HANDS
EMPOWERING WOMEN AND GENDER DIVERSE FOLK THROUGH CARPENTRY, BUILDING AND DIY
What is 'In Our Hands'?
We’re the only non-profit workshop of our kind in the UK, offering radically affordable courses in basic carpentry, woodwork, DIY and building skills for women and all other marginalised gender identities.
Taught and facilitated by women and non-binary people, we create a fun, un-pressured environment where you can learn at your own pace. You’ll have access to tools (hand and power), bench space and supportive guidance from skilled builders and makers. Book on to one of our courses here.
Our workshop is located just outside Steyning, West Sussex. There are transport links from Brighton, Shoreham, Worthing and Horsham, and we’re 1-2 hours drive from London. Find our address here.
What is the ethos of the project?
We want to dismantle the inaccessible nature of building and create an empowering space to learn and explore the fundamentals of woodwork, carpentry, DIY, building and construction .
Whether it's being able to mend your own cupboard doors, put up shelves, build a shed or construct your own home, the limits are your determination, not your gender. We want to reform outdated and immobilising narratives that women are physically not as capable as men to build, and are mentally not as capable to engineer their own build plans.
Our core values are empowerment, inclusivity, community and sustainability. We reclaim and reuse all the timber for our workshops, teaching you to transform pallets and other waste wood into something beautiful and functional.
